CPTED takes a holistic approach to reduce crime through building design and layout. Airports are among the most common examples of space that is designed to be welcoming and secure, with defined lines, layouts, and paths.

There are five principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED):

Activity Support

Encouraging the legitimate use of public spaces (like placing benches and lighting to promote a positive presence).

Natural Access Control

Guiding people by the layout of space (like using gates, fencing, or pathways to define entrances and exits clearly).

Territorial Reinforcement

Using physical design to express ownership (like signage, maintenance, decorative fencing, etc.).

Maintenance

Keeping spaces clean and functional indicates that they are well-maintained and regularly monitored.

Natural Surveillance

Designing landscapes and buildings to increase visibility (like avoiding blind spots, using low shrubs to improve visibility, and placing windows to overlook entrances and sidewalks).

These CPTED principles can be applied to new or retrofit construction for general industries, commercial spaces, community buildings and more. It’s also ideal for non-profit organizations with sensitive needs that want a proper design that’s welcoming and safe for staff and constituents.

Hire a credentialed CPTED practitioner for on-site consulting

Organizations seek CPTED-trained professionals when they’re concerned about:

  • A history of theft, assault, or vandalism on the premises.
  • Liability or insurance risks tied to security.
  • New construction or renovations where safety and usability are key concerns.
  • Urban revitalization efforts that need to balance access and safety.
  • Designing inclusive, accessible, and safe public spaces.

If you’re interested in hiring a credentialed CPTED Practitioner for your next building project, renovation, or simply consulting on an existing facility for practical guidance and tips to enhance security, request a consultation today.

You’ll get practical, hands-on strategies for improving the security of your location that are effective and well-designed. You’ll receive an on-site walkthrough (virtual options can be available) and a detailed report for basic prevention through environmental design measures.

Many people frequently combine basic CPTED consulting with our Active Threat Awareness and Workplace De-escalation trainings. Together, these presentations are conducted on-site with your staff and volunteers.

  • You’ll receive tools and advice tailored to your location, including potential risks, hazard mitigation, and safety training.
  • Sessions are presented through interactive discussions and can be paired with tabletop exercises and walk-throughs.

Frequently Asked Questions about the CPTED certification and consulting

Not at this time.

We prefer and strongly recommend in-person consulting, simply so we can truly see and experience the space as a person does, not a camera lens. But options for online consulting can be made available.

Lighting, fencing, and entry/exit areas are the most common CPTED strategies. They improve a space in ways most people are unlikely to notice when done well. Landscaping is also a common strategy for review.
