Completed in summer 2024, these survey results show some stark differences between our prior 2019 survey results. Participants ranged in all age groups, positions, education, and levels of job satisfaction. Participants in 2024 were more evenly distributed along gender, with 49% females and 51% males vs 60% males in 2019. The most common age range is 45-64.
Breakdown by job titles
Education levels
Participants holding advanced college or university degrees is mostly unchanged from 2019. When asked this year how the relevance of their education relates to the work, 53% said “a lot” and 38% said “some.”
Organization type
Certifications
Most participants hold an average of 1.2 certifications. CHEP, CEDP, and BDLS are the most common certifications.
Most life safety professionals work in large employers, with healthcare systems making up the bulk of our participants’ employers. No one reported being self-employed, a decrease from 2019.
Most professionals are working a typical full-time, 40-hour work week with several reporting more than 50 hours per week, which is in-line with 2019.
Years working in industry
Most participants in our survey have been working more than 10 years in the field.
Degree of work
The number of people working remotely has stayed the same, despite the pandemic’s effects on work from home trends since 2019. However, the number of people reporting “mobile with significant travel time” has decreased by more than 85%.
Career moves
More people seem likely to switch employers than in 2019, with “Stay where I am” seeing a decrease of 22%. Fewer people report wanting to start their own business, too.
Salary ranges
Salaries have gone up, with higher ranges seeing 20%+ more responses over 2019. The largest share in 2019 was the $40,000-$50,999 range. In 2019, only a handful of responses were in the $100,000+ range. The average salary in the US in 2019 was $53,490 and $40,000 in Indiana. Now in 2024, the average US salary is $59,228 and $49,000 in Indiana.
Amount of last raise and job, industry satisfaction
Within the past two years, most people have received raises in line with inflation, and most participants agree or strong agree they are satisfied with their work and their employer. Participants are slightly more negative about the industry as a whole.
