Vantage Point Consulting is now working closely with SYGNAL to bring its gas meter training app into VPC’s HazMat, HAZWOPER, refresher, HazMat Technician, and industrial safety courses.
The result is a more realistic, more accessible way for responders, safety teams, and trainees to practice atmospheric monitoring and hazard recognition during live training scenarios. The need for additional gas meter training comes out of Port Newark and New Palestine train wreck and subsequent NTSB recommendations.
“One of the hardest parts of HazMat training is creating realistic atmospheric monitoring conditions without using actual hazardous products. Real meters, calibration gas, source materials, staged releases, and field props all add expense and setup time. They can also limit how many people get to actively participate at the same time,” says VPC senior consultant Josh Hendrick.
“SYGNAL helps solve that problem by turning students’ own mobile devices into simulated gas meters during training exercises. Instructors can adjust readings remotely, change the scenario as it unfolds, and observe how students interpret atmospheric conditions before making tactical decisions.”
Better HazMat training includes better decisions during atmospheric monitor
Students need to know what readings mean, what those readings suggest about the environment, when conditions are changing, when a team should stop, and when the response strategy should change.
That can be difficult to practice in a classroom or tabletop exercise. It can also be difficult in a hands-on drill if only one participant is holding the meter while everyone else watches.
With SYGNAL, every participant can have a simulated meter on their own mobile device. That gives more participants direct practice, more opportunities to compare readings, and more chances to talk through what they saw and why they made a specific decision.
A controlled way to make mistakes
Training should give students room to make mistakes, but the stakes have to be controlled.
SYGNAL allows VPC instructors to expose students to simulated atmospheric conditions and then immediately pause, review, and discuss the decisions made during the exercise.
“We now use the SYGNAL Gas Meter app in our HazMat Technician courses to reinforce atmospheric monitoring and decision-making,” says Hendrick. “One of the biggest challenges in hazmat training is creating realistic atmospheric monitoring scenarios without the expense, setup time, and safety concerns of using actual products. SYGNAL allows us to expose students to a wide range of simulated atmospheric conditions and watch how they interpret readings, identify hazards, and make tactical decisions.”
That ability to review choices immediately is where the learning happens. Students can see how they interpreted a reading, compare it to the intended hazard, discuss what they missed, and correct their approach before encountering a similar condition in the field.
“It gives students the opportunity to make mistakes in a controlled environment and immediately discuss and correct those decisions,” Hendrick says. “As NFPA standards continue to place greater emphasis on air monitoring and hazard recognition, tools like SYGNAL help us build competency and confidence before responders encounter these situations in the field.”
Useful for departments, responders, and industrial safety teams
VPC will use SYGNAL-enhanced training across HazMat, HAZWOPER, refresher courses, HazMat Technician training, and industrial safety programs where atmospheric monitoring and hazard recognition are important to the course objectives.

SYGNAL does not replace training with real gas detection equipment. Students still need to understand the actual meters and monitoring tools their departments or facilities use. But as a training tool, it gives instructors a flexible and realistic way to reinforce the decisions that matter most.
